INTRODUCTION

 

Urban Design - Arctic Cities is a master studio course at the Tromsø Academy of Landscape and Territorial Studies, run during the fall term 2014. The studio has nine students of various nationalities and on this website you can follow the student’s findings and project works.

 

Simultaneously, the Oslo School of Architecture and Design is running a parallel course at the Institute of Urbanism and Landscape for architects. Both studios will be working with the largest settlement on East-Greenland, Tasiilaq.

 

The settlement has approximately 2 000 inhabitants and 500 dogs and is situated on  Ammassalik Island just south of the Arctic Circle. Traditional hunting and fishing is still very much part of daily life for the inhabitants. Tasiilaq have no industry, but the settlement is gradually building up infrastructure and jobs aimed for tourism.
